TESCO IN BALLAGH
Tesco Ireland’s proposed development at Lung, Ballaghaderreen, has encountered a stumbling block. Granted permission in early January despite objections filed by the RGDATA and AP McCarthy Planning Consultants on behalf of 38 Ballaghaderreen locals, the decision made by Roscommon County Council has now been appealed to An Bord Pleanala. Objections centred on what was perceived as the “inappropriate” location for the 28,000sq ft. superstore and its possible “adverse effects” upon the town itself. The appeal was lodged on 29th January 2009 by a number of parties acting as a single collective appellant. Dealing with approximately 7,000 appeals a year, the independent body has been known, in the majority of appeal cases, to uphold the original decision of the planning authority. All evidence and submissions are to be reviewed and considered and An Bord Pleanala is expected to issue a decision on the development by 3rd June 2009.
